Document Map is similar to its namesake in Microsoft Word. It gives you an outline of your document, and all headings in the document are listed in the Document Map panel on the left side of your document pane. You can choose to show all levels, the highest-level headings only, or lower-level ones as well.

Please note that you must apply built-in heading styles to the headings in the document, so that they will be displayed in the Document Map panel. See How to apply a style to a paragraph.

Jump to a heading

You can easily navigate through your document using the headings in the Document Map panel, which always highlights the heading you are currently at, making sure you won’t get lost in a huge document.

  1. Open the Document Map panel by clicking the Document Map icon on the sidebar to the left, or choosing View > Navigation Panels > Document Map .

  2. In the Document Map panel, click on a heading and the cursor will jump to that heading in the document.

The number of levels Document Map displays

You can choose to show all levels, the highest-level headings only, or lower-level ones as well.

There are two ways to control how many levels of headings will be displayed in the panel:

  • Click the Options icon and choose your preferred level in the Document Map panel.

  • You can expand or collapse individual headings by clicking on the plus and minus icons next to the headings.
